As we progress through the project, we will have checkpoints along the way. You have a few different options. You can use the information you have learned in your research to either:
1. Create your own Ocean Soup Future Scene
2. Identify at least 8 challenges and display them in a creative manner
3. Identify your underlying problem and five solutions and display them in a creative manner
4. Talk with me about a creative way to share what you have learned for this checkpoint
The idea is that you go through the problem solving process and then share what you have done in a creative, innovative manner that helps everyone move closer to development of their action plans.

EEE CHECKPOINT #1: Solutions and UP
ReplyDeleteNila, Kat, Adam, Brittany
1) The Dasani water bottle company has agreed to cut their production by 50%. This way less plastic will end up in the ocean and fewer animals will die. It is called the Dasani 50% Reduction. This will affect people by making them use more recyclable water bottles. There for reducing the plastic that pullouts our oceans.
2) West Junior High School has decided to make a new policy that all plastic bottles have to be recycled or reused. If a student litters their plastic water bottle there will be consequents for that student. This will decrease the amount that goes into the ocean and people lives will barley be changed. They can still use water bottles but they can use them more efficiently. It is called Saving the Ocean Policy.
3) Marketers and business owners in Columbia, Missouri will instead of handing out plastic bags that can easily end up polluting the local environment will hand out environmental friendly cloth bags when you pay a certain amount of money.
4) Plastic companies will a new type of plastic that will be really thin but will also be coated with a thin layer of limestone this way if a bottle is thrown away into the ocean the salt water will dissolve the limestone leaving less plastic in the ocean. This will work because the amount of plastic used is less because we are using biodegradable substances
5) Our EEE group will go around to the elementary schools and explain the Great Pacific Garbage patch to them so that more people will know about it. If more people know about the problem at hand less plastic will end up in the ocean. This will be called the Exposure of Plastic Talks.
UP:
Because plastic is killing animals how might we reduce the amount of plastic that goes into the ocean so that the wild life can continue to grow in peace without creating a dent in our everyday life, in 2050 and beyond.

DeleteNice Job. Do you have another poster that still needs to be turned in?
DeleteMr. Citrus was born in a bottling factory where he was carefully created.
ReplyDeleteHe was then paired with his new best friend Monsieur Carton.
Monsieur Carton and Mr. Citrus were filled to the brim with a delectable liquid known as juice.
There was orange juice, lemonade, grape juice, and any other juice you could imagine.
This lovely pair was filled with orange juice!
After being filled and rejuvenated by this liquid, they took a trip on a train to an airport.
At the airport they went to Colorado!
In Colorado, they were sold at a shop full of juice and vegetables and every other thing you could dream of!
They were such a beautiful pair, that they were picked up by a nice young child, just like you!
The child then took them in their cart, and paid for them in full just like every good citizen would!
After this, the child decided that he should drink some of the amazing orange juice in order to keep his vitamin level at a respectable place!
Uh- oh! Our heroic characters are in trouble! Mr. Citrus and Monsieur Carton are empty!
The young child sees his mother ready to throw the friends away?!
BUT THE CHILD STOPS THE MOTHER!
They say “No, mamma! You mustn’t do that! There are so many uses for that… that poor recyclable!”
The child knows that if he were to simply throw this away, it would go to the scariest place the carton and cap had ever seen.
The poor friends would go to the…
GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH!!!!!!!!!
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is where things made out of plastic, like Mr. Citrus, go after you’re done with them!
Mr. Citrus and Monsieur Carton had a close call today, so we have to make sure they don’t get hurt!
The two friends will always be together, so you’re going to learn how to make them into a handy dandy wallet!
Thanks for your help saving the world and Mr. Citrus and Monsieur Carton, you sure are a super hero!!0.
This will make an awesome childrens book. What audience do you plan to share with?

ReplyDelete8 Challenges
1.Due to the fact that more than one billion tons of plastic have been manufactured over the last fifty years, there may be a problem with the plastic affecting the natural habitat of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch because organisms might mistake the plastic for food.
2.Since plastic can be formed into extremely thin, featherweight bags that are strong, waterproof, and cheaper, there may be a problem with the plastic releasing harmful toxins into the earth because they can be consumed by animals looking for food.
3.Due to the fact that plastic can absorb the pollutants in the ocean, there may be a problem with the natural habitat being able to support itself because the essential nutrients are taken away.
4.Because so many disposable plastic products are being made today, there may be a problem with some of the trash ending up in the oceans because there is no proper place to dispose of them.
5.Due to the fact that the concentration of the pollutants gets higher as it moves up the food chain, there may be a problem with physiological disorders in the ocean organisms because of their inability to detect harmful prey.
6.Because plastic is not a biodegradable substance, there may be a problem with it entering food chains because of its capability to breaking down into microscopic debris.
7.Because thousands of fishing nets are abandoned in the ocean every year, there may be a problem with them entangling marine wildlife because they can float in oceans for a long time.
8.Due to the fact that water surrounding surface plastic can thicken, there may be a problem with it causing health problems among the animals because of the sunlight dissolving the plastic.

2075 - The Year of the Garbage Crisis
President of the United States:
In the world of today the aggressive expansion of urban development, and the trash produced by said expansion, has become a major international problem, and a quickly growing one as well. In recent years there has been little to no effort in the field of trash removal. The vastly ignored ocean garbage patches of the early 21st century have become an issue of increasing importance today, in the threats they pose to the ocean environment and in the effect on the countries these garbage patches border.
Early efforts to stifle this expanding garbage problem, like awareness campaigns and local clean-ups, were not able to fully address the problem or even being to understand its magnitude. In short, these efforts were generally ineffective.
The amount of garbage in our oceans has grown exponentially due to the rapid expansion of urban development, our “throw away” mentality developed in the early 2000’s through a failing industrial and factory production model, and the growing size of the global garbage patches. What was once 2012’s “14 billion pounds of a year” is now a detrimental 50 billion pounds of trash dumped annually into our oceans. Once one objectively examines the facts it's clear that the garbage crisis should be considered one of the major calamities of this century.
With such a massive amount of trash gathering in the ocean, the United States and the world as a whole are creating an environment that is illfit, if not dangerous, for oceanic wildlife. Because of how plastic reacts to the already existing pollutants that plague the sea, it is now clear that any creature ingesting even a minute amount of plastic is likely to suffer very dire consequences. Those consequences are only growing in severity . The potential repercussions will lead to disaster; if we continue to standby, and if we refuse to take the actions necessary to prevent this global trash epidemic from spreading any further than it already has. Damage assessment and containment are what is needed, not the turning of a blind eye to the danger at hand. This is not only a nationwide problem but a global one and it is up the United States to take the first steps towards making our world a better, cleaner and healthier place to live in.
Sincerely, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Use the information provided in the correspondence above to identify challenges presented by NOAA with regards to the trash crisis, identify an underlying problem, develop solutions, and produce an action plan to address the garbage crisis.

DeleteExcellent Job Ladies!
DeleteBecause the great pacific garbage patch is increasing how might we decrease it so that the ocean can be cleaner and will not be polluted by the year 2035 and beyond?
ReplyDeleteSolution 1: Save our oceans could have people volunteer to clean up the seashores. They can do it by telling people to come to a location. From there they would clean up all the plastic waste that has washed up on the shore. It will work because it will make the ocean
Solution 2: Better Alternatives will make a shopping bag that is not made of plastic. They will do it by finding a renewable resource that is perfect for a bag. It will work because it will decrease the amount of plastic in the ocean and not pollute it.
Solution 3: Stop spreading plastics Co. will make a ban on common plastic products. They will do it by banning common plastic things like plastic bags and plastic bottles. It will work because it will decrease plastic pollution and not pollute the ocean.
Solution 4:Take care of sea life will take care of the animals that have been damaged by the pollution from the ocean. They will do it by taking these animals to vets for medical aid. They will then be sent to more cleaner areas. This will work because it will make the ocean better and clear pollution.
Solution 5: Purification co will make a system that will purify ocean water from pollution. They will do it by putting the trash into one pipe that will clean out the water and burn the trash. This will work since it will clean the ocean and decrease plastic pollution.
These are great ideas. Have you used a Web 2.0 tool to share them creatively? If so, then you need to upload the link here.

ReplyDeleteCheckpoint one written.
ReplyDelete1. America alone uses up two million plastic bottles every five minutes, which leads to massive amounts of plastic bottles in the oceans, making the great pacific garbage patch even bigger.
2. As plastic degrades it releases dangerous toxins that harm wildlife, putting much damage on the ocean environments which are very fragile.
3. Plastics take hundreds of years to biodegrade but they are piling up in the oceans too fast, this is a problem because soon the oceans will be near completely filled with waste.
4. Much plastic is thrown in the ocean, many animals from whales down to plankton mistake
plastic for food and die eating them.
5. There is so much garbage in ocean, it piles up on beaches and is seriously damaging to the beach environment.
6. Because plastic is part of our daily life and culture, most people are not even aware what happens to their plastic or how serious the problem is.
7. The ocean is in a bad state, but we still depend on it for many things, if the ocean ecosystem collapses we will lose many things including seafood, also many people will die from toxic chemicals.
8. As many as 1 trillion plastic bags are discarded each year worldwide, leading to massive amounts of plastic bags in the ocean which seriously damages the ocean.
