Checkpoint 2

Checkpoint #2

As we progress through the project, we will have checkpoints along the way. You have a few different options for this checkpoint. You can use the information you have learned in your research to either:

1.      Identify your underlying problem and five solutions and display them in a creative manner
2.      Elaborate on your final solution idea by displaying at least three ways you could use it to develop an action plan and share them in a creative manner
3.      Talk with me about a creative way to share what you have learned for this checkpoint

Now that you have a clear understanding of the research and challenges involved with Ocean Soup, the time has come to finalize your solution idea, which will then allow you to begin creation of the final action plan you will implement.

Keep in mind… if your Key Verb Phrase focuses on REDUCING the amount of plastic entering the ocean, then your Action Plan must reflect a project that is focused on REDUCING the amount of plastic entering the ocean. If your Key Verb Phrase focuses on EDUCATING people about the problem, then that is what your Action Plan should focus on.
Hopefully you now see why the Underlying Problem is SO VERY important in problem solving.

    Checkpoint #2

    Underlying Problem
Because an overflowing amount of harmful plastics and other dangerous toxins has posed a threat to all society’s well-being and environment, in what ways might we reduce the amount of trash and plastics so that people can have a better quality of living, globally in 3013 and beyond?

    Solution 1
The Clean Up Crew will create a global clean-up that correctly disposes of most trash in cities called Clean for Green. The program will make city workers and other citizens get together and pick up trash and other plastics. This will work because there will be less trash in the city and ocean so people will have cleaner and better environments to live in.

    Solution 2
The Plastic is Bad company will create the Trash Filter that will swim through the ocean and use a giant net to gather all the plastic. All the trash in the ocean will be gathered together in the net and disposed properly. This will reduce the amount of trash and plastic in the ocean and allow trash to be properly disposed so the quality of living will be improved.

    Solution 3
The Use Other Materials company will use other materials to use instead of plastic such as paper or clay that can biodegrade much faster than plastic and can be reused many times, so there will be less plastic in the ocean. They will offer only clay and paper cups, plates, bowls, etc. This will reduce the amount of plastic in the ocean and in landfills, decreasing the harmful toxins found in biodegrading plastics improving the quality of life.

    Solution 4
The We Invent Company will create a device that helps reduce the amount of space that plastics take up called Squish-E. It will compress the plastics and other trash into a smaller more manageable size and dispose of it in a designated safe area. This will work because it reduces the amount of space the plastics takes up and will provide a better environment because the trash is not as harmful.

    Solution 5
The Media Awareness Television show will create a documentary about the Plastic in the Ocean and how this will affect the people in the future. This will cause awareness and warn people about using plastic and disposing plastic correctly and improve the quality of living.

    SONG:
There’s an overflowingggg amount of harmful plastics, and other dangerous toxinssssss, they pose a threat to all society’s well-being and environment...
    SO WE SHOULD
Create a program called Clean for Green
    That correctly disposes of trash
Or make a filter that swims in the ocean and picks up all the trash (BUMBUMBUMBUM)
Create a TV show, that shows awareness of, all the plastics in the oceannnnn (There’s just so much!)
Building a robot called, Squish-E that can squish trash, it’ll save lots of spaaaace (Whoo!)
Or we could just use other materials, like clay and paper productsss (Let’s do it!)
So let’s try to eliminate the trash in the ocean once for allllllll
Let’s make the world a better place in the future for me and youuu

Twenty little fish swimming under the sun,
But here comes plastic to ruin the fun.
It looks like food, but beware
For it leads to a toxic despair
Twenty little corpses floating under the sun,
    The plastic nightmare has begun!

    Chorus:
Fishes, fishes in the sea in the sea
Consumed by the deadly plastic disease
Tell me where the fishes dwell,
And I will tell you what cast the deadly spell.

Plastic has returned to play again,
And it will stay from no to the end.
    Plastic bottles litter the shore,
And it comes to cover the ocean floor.

    Chorus:
    Fishes, fishes in the sea
Consumed by the deadly plastic disease
Tell me where the fishes dwell,
And I will tell you how to break the deadly spell.

Don’t fear, hope is still there
Don’t throw away your trash without a care
Put it in the recycling bin,
Then you’ll become an environmental friend.

    Fishes, fishes in the sea
Consumed by the friendly recycling disease
Tell me where the fishes dwell,
And I will tell you what reversed the deadly spell.

  9. For my checkpoint 2 I created the model of my solution, like we talked about because I know next to nothing about microbiology. The solution I chose had to do with grouping an environmental organization, enterprising university students and experts to modify bacteria that consume oil into ones that consume plastic.

To develop this solution this week I did research about these microbes and found that a particular type of bacteria, the Alcanivorax bacteria is capable of consuming the hydrocarbons in oil and transforming them into carbon dioxide and benign waste, removing the toxins from the food chain. These are the same hydrocarbons that are used to create plastics.

I have made a model of this action plan, but this week (18-22) I will be working writing it out in persuasive essay format, and solving a few issues associated with my action plan including possible bacteria blooms, sunken plastics, where light cannot reach the bacteria, the sophistication of these bacteria, the variety necessary to clean up the variety of garbage etc.

I am also working on digital posters.

    Underlying Problem:
Due to the fact that the great pacific garbage patch has turned into a dumping place for many plastics and trash, in what way might we help improve its condition so that the sea life can live safely in 2013 and beyond?
    Solutions:
    1. CampaigningGPGP.com will create a series of campaigning methods that will spread information educating people about the GPGP. These advertising campaigns will address the main issues and invite people to joint the movement against garbage disposal in the ocean. By convincing more people, it will spread global awareness in 2013 and beyond.
    2. Recycle Now.INC will use ships as a way to transport plastics out of the sea and into recycling factories. The ships will be fuel efficient tools to take trash out of the ocean. When the trash is transported into factories, it will be classified as trash, recycle, or reuse. Not only will this take garbage out of the GPGP, but will help preserve resources by recycling and reusing. Countries surrounding the GPGP will help with this movement in 2013 and beyond.
    3. Towers International.INC will send out “pods” into the ocean that will serve many purposes such as taking out plastic, feeding sea life, and extract pollutants from the ocean. The pods will themselves be made out of plastic and float. They will be monitored by supervisors to ensure that the pods are used to their maximum potential. The pods will clean up the GPGP and will continue to be used beyond 2013.
    4. Modelthefish.com will create a duplicate of a whale that will be used to collect trash from the oceans. The whale will have special sensors that will detect and collect plastic. After this, the plastic will be disposed of properly. The advantage of using a whale to collect trash is that it will not disturb the sea life or frighten them. A practice model will test the whale out before launching the original model.
    5. TheBlueBag.INC will create a program that will pass around blue recycling bags and encourage people to dispose of plastics the right way. After each week, the blue bags will be sent to the city’s recycling department. The bags will advertise the condition of the GPGP and will state processes to improve it. This will educate people and help the GPGP in 2013 and beyond.

    1. We will distribute our story to students in Columbia schools along with an explanation of the ocean soup to help raise awareness of the problem of plastic in our oceans. This will allow us to get more people to focus on finding ways to clean up our oceans and make environmental problems more accessible to people who don’t understand the science of them.

    2. We will submit our story to magazines and other literary institutions in Columbia such as the public library to get our story published. This will raise awareness of the problem of the ocean soup among Columbia residents. This will help to combat the growing problem of plastic pollution by encouraging people to be more ecologically responsible.

    3. We will upload our story to literary websites such as writer’s digest. This will help to generate a greater movement to eliminate plastic pollution in our oceans. This will help to connect the issue to readers and writers all over the world to inform and motivate them to become active in stopping the ocean soup from growing.

    Underlying Problem
Because when plastics degrade in the ocean, they release potentially dangerous additives and byproducts in the water that can negatively harm ocean animals, in what ways can we limit the usage of plastics so that the ocean animals live longer and healthier lives,in the world, in the year 2013 and beyond?

    1. The GabrielCalvin company will invent a new type of plastic bottle called “Hyper-Bottles.” These Hyper-Bottles will be made out of materials that degrades easily and will release small water purifiers into the ocean as it degrades. These bottles will limit the usage of plastic bottles and the purified water will help ocean animals live longer and healthier lives.

    2. The B.T.C. corporation will pass a law called “The Plastic Bottle Law.” This law will ban all plastic bottle manufacturing companies so people will have to water bottles that can be used multiple times instead of the one time use plastic bottles. This law will limit the usage of plastic bottles which will help ocean animals live longer and healthier lives.

    3. The SongPong company will create a commercial called “How YOU are harming the ocean” This commercial will be aired on every T.V. Channel and will describe the harms of the plastic bottles on the ocean animals and the ocean and show the animals that have been harmed by plastics. This will raise the awareness of the people watching the commercial which will lower the usage of plastic bottles so that the ocean animals can live healthier and longer lives.

    4. The G.T.C. corporation will invent a plastic eating machine called “The Shark”. These machines will be placed in the ocean and they will swim around eating plastics or other trash in the ocean. When the machines are full, the plastics inside the machine will be turned into clean water which will be released into the ocean. This will limit the usage of plastics which will help ocean animals live longer and healthier lives.

    5. The Plastic Sucks company will create a new job for people called “Plastics Grabbers”. This job will let people to use scuba gear to pick up plastics and other trash with their special equipment. Their salary will depend on the amount of plastics or trash they pick up. This will lower the amount of plastics in the ocean which will help ocean animals live longer and healthier lives.

    Here is my action plan!

Oceans all around the world are having the same problem. Plastic, and other materials that should be recycled, are being thrown in the trash. Therefore, 10% of the plastic made every year ends up in the ocean, and 80% of the garbage that floats around in the water comes from the land. This proves that people still don’t recycle enough. At my school, we just throw away all plastic bottles. Most of them will probably just end up in the ocean. The Blue Bag Project is a solution that will help increase recycling at schools all around the world.

Blue recycling bags will be placed in every classroom in every school. Students will drop their water bottles and other plastic materials in the bag. When the blue bags have been filled up, certain people will bring the bags home and recycle them, or drop them off at a recycling place. The students in the school will become more motivated to recycle the bottles because there will be more places for them to put them, instead of just throwing the bottles away.

The main problem occurring in the oceans is the amount of marine debris that floats around in large sections, such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. How might we find a way to reduce the amount of trash that enters the ocean? This is where The Blue Bag Project comes in. By having the students recycle the plastic they use in school, less and less trash will enter the ocean, because 90% of all trash that covers the ocean is plastic.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that only 6.8 percent of all plastics were recycled in 2007 as compared to the 50 percent of all paper which was recycled. Is that an okay percentage? Not really. If only 6.8 percent of all plastic is being recycled, what’s going to happen to our earth? What’s going to happen when plastic and other trash covers all of the oceans and all of the land? If the Blue Bag Project is executed in schools, then hopefully more than 6.8 percent of plastic will be recycled. The oceans won’t be as congested with trash, and the marine ecosystems will begin to thrive again.

Once students have been accustomed to recycling plastic bottle, they will hopefully want to start raising awareness about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The amount of plastic and trash in the ocean will begin to decrease. This solution will start to improve recycling conditions at all schools. Posters will be placed on garbage cans, reminding students to recycle the plastic bottles. The teachers that have the bags in their rooms will hang signs above their door. These signs will inform the students that these teachers have the blue bags in their room. This solution will improve the quality of oceans all around the world.

    1. Good plan Claire. When you are sharing your action plan use definites. Instead of saying, "IF the Blue Bag Project is executed in schools, then HOPEFULLY more than 6.8 percent of plastic will be recycled." say "WHEN the Blue Bag Project is executed in schools, then more than 6.8 percent of plastic will be recycled." Now you need to figure out how you are going to market your BLUE BAG PROJECT.

    Us: Dear Mr. Giessman,

As you might know in EEE we are currently studying the negative impacts of plastic pollution in our oceans. We are using project based learning to display our understanding of the issue at hand and would like an opportunity to educate others. We would like to be able to come into one of the elementary gifted classrooms to give a presentation on the appalling effects of the trash we deposit into the ocean.

Our presentation would consist of many different ways to educate the gifted students about this dilemma the Earth is facing. We would like to read them fictional stories written by us regarding drastic effects the pollution could eventually cause. Along with these stories we would arrange a craft activity with recycled materials, such as plastic bottles, creating the strange type of fish from our stories. After the creative displays we would sum up the facts and educate them about the ocean pollution. We would also provide snacks.

We would like to know if you would be open to this opportunity for us to share our knowledge. If so, we would need to know which class we would present to, how many kids would be in the class, and when we would be presenting. Thank you for taking this into consideration, we hope this works out!

    Sincerely,

    Jasmine Jalali and Julia Bower

Mr. G: Let me see what I can arrange

    Us: Okay, thank you!

Mr. G: OK, pick a day (or days) after Spring Break. You can do your project with fourth graders from 9 to 10, or part of that time. You might avoid Wednesdays, since that’s a big crowd. If you need more than one day with the same group, let me know. Get back to me with what you’re thinking.

The Bot’s arm fell off as it was overloaded with the trash. The winner was the Mustang named Steve; it had beaten the Prius in the trash haul-off. Their goal was to see which Bot could bring back the most trash, and with that trash the winning bot would create another Bot from the trash it brought back. This competition was completely controlled and organized by the Bots themselves.
Steve carried his bin of trash back to his building shop, and dumped the trash on the table. His arms moved like lightning as Steve built the new bot from the heap, the works of a car slowly emerged. He had gotten lucky with the trash with a full bottle that he cut down the middle to form a truck bed. This Bot would be impossible to beat.
The next morning Steve woke up early to start training the new bot, as they had to get back to work next week. The new bots name was Hu’Kaisha. He showed her the difference between garbage and sea life, and how to use her different components. She had scissors attached to one of her rotating limbs, to detach pieces of trash that are too large to take at once.
Hu’Kaisha had worked the whole week to become the best bot she could be, and it was time to travel to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and get to work. It was an amazing sight, hundreds of thousands of tiny robotic bugs took off from the roof of the NASA headquarters, and they all headed towards the Pacific Ocean Gyre. When Hu’Kaisha and Steve arrived, there were already thousands of Nano-bots sifting the ocean of debris and trash.
After only a few minutes of work, Steve and Hu’Kaisha’s baskets were full of trash, and they started the journey back. For these bots made with new technology, it only was around an hour to get back home. The bots dumped their trash into their garage and went back for more. They did this constantly for weeks at a time, until they were out of charge, and needing minor repairs. At this point they would go home to their garages, plug into the wall, and start building more bots out of the trash that they picked up. They would end up having collected dozens of tons of trash each, and with swarms of 1000+, it added up.
The whole operation ended up profitable, with the trash that wasn’t used towards making bots, went towards making other products that are needed in everyday life, such as binders, chairs, bottles, shoe soles, etc. NASA sold these products to large companies such as Wal-Mart, Sam’s, Dollar General, and Target.
After a few days of charging and building, the bots would get back to work and start the cycle over again. After a few years of this cycle, the bots would be technologically obsolete, to the point of being completely inefficient. Steve was at this point. He knew he was wasting NASA’s time by even operating, so he drove to the Nano-Technology wing where he was disassembled and rebuilt with new technologically advanced updates. Because of this system, no bots ever really left the swarm, but more and more kept joining. These bots were the size of the tip of a pinkie, and more efficient than a team of astronauts. They were the Nano-Swarm.

    Underlying Problem:
Because the amount of trash that is polluting the environment is increasing at an exponential rate, how might we raise awareness of the growing issue of pollution in the oceans and the problems that occur when it happens, so that the widespread cleanup of the oceans of the world may begin in the year 2075 and beyond?
    Solutions:

    • Every state and country will set up their own individual Adopt-A-Beach program. This program will allow citizens to “adopt” a beach and send in support money to the state/country to pay the beach custodians who will do the actually clean-up of the beaches. This will encourage people to clean-up the beaches by showing them how simple and cheap it can be, also this will inform the public of its impending doom.

    • NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) will create the Oceanic Campaign. This advertising campaign will utilize televised advertisements online commercials and podcasts to raise awareness about the world garbage crisis. This will encourage the people of the world to help with future cleanup efforts, and the further forwarding the recycling efforts of the late 21st century. This initiative will be presented to the 50 most polluting countries of the world that are currently harming the ocean environment in the year 2075 and beyond.

    • Sevenly, an online fundraising program, will raise awareness and money for the Ocean Soup Campaign. This will be done through the designing and production of ocean soup awareness shirts. The money raised by this campaign will go to the Ocean Soup Campaign. Sevenly’s following and influence in the charity world will help raise influence among its millions of followers on the issue of ocean pollution and help gain followers for the world wide cleanup effort.

    • MEJC will film a humorous documentary called “The Little Nurdle” that will raise awareness around the world about the pollution and the effects of pollution in the oceans by talking about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and giving ideas for ways to help with the ocean clean-up. The Little Nurdle film will engage and inform viewers by presenting actual facts and footage of pollution. This film will help the awareness raising efforts of MEJC in relation to the ocean soup calamity and will help inspire people to join the relief efforts.

    • Students of Columbia Public Schools will start a video blog (or Vlog) that will raise awareness about ocean pollution. This vlog will be a monthly video publication that will address the negative impacts plastic pollution and how they affect the marine environment. These videos will utilize humor and creativity to raise popularity and effectively raise awareness on the ocean pollution issue through worldwide viewing and help inspire relief efforts through sponsored volunteer organizations and encouragement of viewers to volunteer to help clean up the worlds oceans in the year 2075 and beyond.

  31. Because people have developed a habit of throwing away everything, how might we try to stop the careless, destructive lifestyle many people have adopted, so that environmental destruction can be averted in the Pacific Ocean in 2013 and beyond.

 The United Nations will pass the Clean Ocean Act. The Act will ban the dumping of trash into the ocean. This will stem the flow of plastic waste into the ocean by cutting it off at the source with a blanket ban on dumping waste into waterways and the ocean itself. It will help overt environmental destruction and the death of one of our most valuable resources by.
 The U.S. Government will start a program called The Pacific Protection Act. The program will provide monetary bonuses to private groups that make a significant effort to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This will spur on private efforts to clean up the GPGP by helping those who have the vision to help try to save our world. It will help evade environmental destruction by bolstering efforts to save the Pacific.
 Greenpeace will design and build the TrashBot. The TrashBot will clean up trash in the oceans of the world and transport it to central processing facility. At the facility it will be broken down and reformed for use in more permanent products. This will help keep the oceans clean and also pump new products into the consumers hands that will not be thrown away.
 Ordinary people can petition their city counsel to expand recycling capability and promote recycling. This will cause cities recycling capability to expand, reducing the amount of trash flowing into the ocean. This will help save the plants and animals living in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
 EcoCo will design the Trash Net. The Trash Net will be a net strung between ships that will collect even the smallest bits of trash in the ocean with its microfiber weave. It will let water through, and open up around fish and other living things. This will clean the ocean and also save living things.

    1. Per, Great job. You want to avoid absolutes like "stop" when constructing your key verb phrase. Your wording is a little vague. Make sure you elaborate on the U.P. It is the most important element in your problem solving. Awesome ideas!

  34. Due the fact that people are not aware about the problem, how might we make people more aware of the plastic pollution in the ocean, so that the ocean is more clean and free of pollution in the year 2014 and beyond globally.

    1. Google will make a new web program that shows people the ocean called Google Ocean. As more trash accumulates in the real ocean Google Ocean will show that accurately, making people aware of what is happening. That will cause them to be more aware and pollute less.

    2. Apple corporation will release a new app called iRecycle that gets people to recycle more plastic, paper and glass by letting them automatically check recycling and trash levels. This app will also let them recycle digitally. This will make people more aware and also let them recycle easier.

    3. Royal Caribbean company will take people on cruises that show them plastic and trash in the ocean. They will go on routes that deliberately take them through garbage patches. This will show people actual plastic and trash in the ocean and make them aware and help people pollute less.

    4. Stores and markets around the world will lessen plastic products so that since there is less plastic consumed, less plastic will end up in the ocean. People can resort to alternatives instead of plastic to meet their basic needs without polluting the ocean.

    5. YouTube will make a new area, dedicated to showing people videos about the ocean and what state it is in. This will make people more aware about ocean soup and also will make them more environmentally friendly to the ocean. This will get people to pollute less so that the ocean is cleaner for the future.
